Immigration

Information on migrating to Australia is available from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) website (http://www.immi.gov.au) or your nearest Australian Overseas Embassy. A list of Embassies is also available from the DIMIA website

Health Insurance

Information on the national public health insurance system is available from the Health Insurance Commission website (http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au). Private health insurance is also available from providers such as Medibank Private, Medical Benefits Funds of Australia (MBF), Hospitals Contributions Fund (HCF) and NIB Health Funds.

People on temporary visas are not covered by the national public health insurance scheme and should take out their own private health insurance for the duration of their stay

Medical and Medicare

Medical and Medicare is Australia's universal health insurance scheme and to be eligible you must reside in Australia and hold Australian citizenship, a permanent visa or New Zealand citizenship. Residents of countries who have signed Reciprocal Health Care Agreements are entitled to restricted access to health cover while visiting Australia

Australian Tax Office

If you are working in Australia, you must apply for a Tax File Number. For information on this and Australia's Taxation system, go to http://www.ato.gov.au.

Social Security

Centrelink is the government agency that deals with Australia's social security system. For more information, visit http://www.centrelink.gov.au/.

Cars

Australian Driver's Licences are administered at state / territory level and regulations may vary as a result. You will normally need to obtain a state licence within three (3) months of taking up residence. The following links provide information on a driving motor vehicle and obtaining a driving licence:
