13 May 2010. Vol 5, Issue 2

Dear Readers,

This week the USA celebrated the 3rd Annual National Train Day with events held across the country to celebrate America’s love for trains. National Train Day also commemorated the 141st anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad’s inception.

Amtrak official Emmett Fremaux said National Train Day celebrated “the train‘s impact on try and provided an opportunity for Americans to further understand the influence rail has on the future of transportation in America. “With a greater national focus on energy efficiency in travel, trains are already a leading alternative with 20 per cent more fuel efficiency than commercial airlines and 28 per cent more efficiency than car travel per passenger mile.”

What an excellent incentive to promote our industry - wouldn’t it be wonderful to see an international rail day?

Jobs of the Week encompass three disciplines in two countries. In Western Australia we have a vacancy for a Rolling Stock Engineer to work in the Pilbara region; and an opportunity for a Key Account Manager in Perth to define accounts on behalf of multiple divisions and sectors and represent them in all sales and strategic activities. In the United Arab Emirates we are seeking an experienced safety professional to work in Abu Dhabi to assist in the development and application of the safety standards and procedures required for the planning, design, construction, testing, commissioning and finally the operation of a major railway project.
