3 September 2024. China. Belt & Road railway training programme to be launched

Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Beijing Jiaotong University, and MTR Academy are to launch a Belt & Road Advanced Professional Development Programme in Railway Transport. This will combine the teaching and research capabilities of the two universities with MTR Corp’s practical experience. They plan to launch at least one training program per year under the three-year agreement signed on August 26.

3 September 2024. United Kingdom. Procurement underway to replace ScotRail High - Speed Trains

The Scottish Government announced today that procurement will begin to replace its Intercity trains. The procurement, which will be led by ScotRail on behalf of Transport Scotland, will seek a replacement for the High - Speed Train (HST) fleet which operates on its InterCity routes between Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness.

3 September 2024. United Kingdom. HS2 tunnel segment casting complete at Isle of Grain factory

Production of concrete segments used to construct HS2’s 5-mile Northolt Tunnel has been completed in a major milestone for subcontractor PACADAR UK. The company began work on the production of the segments in April 2022 and have completed the production of 59,129 segments, which make up 8,447 tunnel rings – seven segments per ring. 3 September 2024. Europe. Alpha Trains Expands Fleet with Up to 70 Vectron Locomotives in Partnership with Siemens Mobility

Alpha Trains, the largest private rolling stock lessor in Continental Europe, has announced the expansion of its fleet by up to 70 Vectron locomotives. Alpha Trains and Siemens Mobility signed a framework agreement in July 2024 for the supply of up to 70 Vectron locomotives, including an initial order for 35 locomotives. The framework agreement foresees the provision of multiple variants of Vectron locomotives, including Multi-System and Dual Mode units.

2 September 2024. United States. Alstom Completes Sale of North American Signalling Business

Alstom has completed the sale of its North American conventional signalling business to Knorr-Bremse AG. The business was sold for a purchase price of approximately 690 million USD. This follows the binding agreement signed by the two companies on 19 April 2024. Alstom will now continue to serve the North American signalling market with communication-based train control (CBTC) and European train control systems (ETCS) solutions.

2 September 2024. United States. Seattle light rail extension is ‘the biggest thing to happen in Snohomish County since the first 747’

A ribbon cutting, food trucks, face painting, live music, and prizes for people who visited all four new stations were among the celebrations marking the opening on August 30 of a 13·7 km extension of Seattle’s light rail 1 Line north from Northgate to Lynnwood City Center in Snohomish County. There are intermediate stations at Shoreline South/148th, Shoreline North/185th serving a stadium and conference centre, and at Mountlake Terrace.

30 August 2024. Australia. Inland Rail ramping up in Wangaratta

Construction on the major freight rail line that will connect Melbourne and Brisbane is gaining speed, with preparation happening at the Green St bridge and Wangaratta railway station. A 650-tonne Superlift crawler crane with a 66m lattice boom, and two supporting cranes have arrived on site to assemble and install the Green St bridge structure. Two 50-tonne main girders and 15 cross girders for the new bridge will be trucked to the site in the early hours of Tuesday 3 September.

30 August 2024. United Kingdom. HS2 Reaches Halfway Point Tunnelling into Birmingham

HS2’s tunnel boring machine (TBM), Mary Ann has reached the halfway point on its 3.5-mile journey to create the Bromford Tunnel into Birmingham. This 1,600-tonne machine has so far excavated and constructed 1.75 miles of tunnel, starting from Water Orton and heading towards Washwood Heath in Birmingham. The TBM began its work last year and is currently operating approximately 40 meters underground. Having already passed beneath the Park Hall Nature Reserve and the River Tame, it is now tunnelling under Castle Vale.

Our client is a global railway infrastructure equipment and technology company and they are seeking an Applications and Support Engineer to be based in China and reporting to the Technical Director based in the UK.

Job Purpose:

- To support the company's operating companies and other agencies by dealing with technical enquiries for the use of the company's products, assessing technical enquiries for the use of the company's products in relation to commercial/in-service requests and supporting contractors building railways and manufacturers of sleepers, switches & crossings, etc.

Key Results Area:

- Provide technical advice, guidance and training to the sales team, contractors, test organisations and end users of products, with respect to the product and any equipment necessary for the installation, extraction and general use of these fastenings' products.

- Contribute to the development and evaluation of hand tools, sleeper mould plates, gauges and other ancillary equipment, requesting other Technical Department resources as necessary.

- Advise the client's companies using the e-form database on technical suitability and availability of existing designs that are compliant with customer requirements and are safe and fit for purpose. Composing specification compliance statements as required in response to customer specifications submitted.

- Identify aspects of customer requirements that are not met by existing systems so that new product design work can be initiated, preparing design inputs and sketches for the Design / Drawing office.

- Compilation of necessary design calculations as technical justification of new or existing fastening assembly designs. Become proficient in the use of in-house design and calculation software.

- Review and check drawings with respect to function and applicability to customer requirements and pass them on for final approval.

Job Requirements

Strong engineering background with a strong working knowledge of railway permanent way engineering.

- Fluent local speaker, ideally a local, to understand the local thinking

- Have excellent spoken and written English

- Need to be of a standing that will be taken seriously at a senior level

- Excellent communicator at all levels and be able to communicate with people at all levels, inside and outside the company.

- Not afraid to get their hands dirty from time to time.

- Prepared to undertake extensive travel.

QC Engineer / Inspector, Taoyuan City, Taiwan

Job Description:

Our client provides engineering services and offers energy, environmental, steel structure, and industrial machinery projects.

They are seeking an E&I QC Engineer / Inspector to work in Guanyin District, Taoyuan City

Duties:

- Residing at the Taoyuan/Taipei office and carrying out work under the instructions of a Japanese manager.

- Preparation of quality plans and other documents necessary for quality control

- Schedule control, review and approval of quality control-related documents/books and inspection procedures/reports submitted by each vendor

- Coordination of witness inspection schedule with customer, arrangement on the day

- Preparation and response to Non Conformance Report (NCR)

- Creating quality education materials for workers when they enter the site, compiling records of the education conducted, and creating and filing reports.

- Timely and smooth communication with the Japanese headquarters, project managers, Japanese managers, and other staff.

- Other related work

Job Requirements

- Public engineering management (mechanical and electrical) licence required

- Quality control experience: 3 years or more (CPC contract work experience is a plus)

- Public engineering quality control
