17 February 2025. Japan. New fleet boosts capacity on Nippori-Toneri Liner

The Delivery of the lightweight aluminum alloy Series 330 trainsets has enabled the replacement of 16 Series 300 sets supplied by Niigata Transys for the opening of the 9·7 km line from Nippori to Minumadai-shinsuikoen in 2008. The Series 330 trainsets feature longitudinal seating to increase capacity and help reduce congestion caused by an increase in ridership. More commuters and students are now travelling to the city centre because of development along the 13-station route.

17 February 2025. Canada. Canada invests $23m in rail projects to enhance supply chain resilience

Canada invests $23m in rail projects to enhance supply chain resilience. The Government of Canada has announced an investment of up to C$33.1m ($23.3m) to bolster the nation’s rail infrastructure, aiming to enhance economic growth and supply chain resilience. The funding has been allocated for six projects in Alberta and British Columbia (BC) under the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF). The NTCF is a competitive merit-based system, aimed at assisting infrastructure owners and users in investing in essential transportation assets that bolster economic activity across Canada.

17 February 2025. United Kingdom. ‘Tina’ on hand to keep Northern wheels turning

A wheel lathe named Tina has been unveiled as the latest weapon in the battle to ensure Northern “keeps on turning”. The machine, which reshapes and balances a train’s wheels following natural wear and tear in service, reduces the impact of the train on the track and makes journeys smoother for customers. It has been installed at Allerton TrainCare Centre in Merseyside as part of an £8.9 million project between Network Rail and Northern.

17 February 2025. United States. Amtrak Partners with Private Sector on Major Rail Infrastructure Investments

Amtrak, in collaboration with private sector partners from construction, manufacturing, rail supply, and engineering, has announced plans to invest in large-scale infrastructure projects across the United States. These projects aim to modernize the country’s rail network, improve mobility, and support economic growth. The initiative is expected to involve more than 100,000 workers across all 50 states. Amtrak invested 4.5 billion USD in infrastructure and fleet projects in the previous fiscal year.

14 February 2025. Australia. Suburban Rail Loop secures $2.2B in fed funding

The federal government is providing the Victorian government $2.2 billion to support the Suburban Rail Loop, but much more is needed to complete the landmark project.   Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said that the money can only be spent on ‘very specific things’ including ground testing, utilities, and land acquisition.  Building for the project's first stage, SRL East is already underway between Cheltenham and Box Hill in Melbourne.

14 February 2025. China. World’s First Carbon Fibre Subway Train Enters Service

Last month, the CETROVO 1.0 subway train, jointly developed by CRRC and Qingdao Metro Group, entered commercial service on Qingdao Metro Line 1 in China. This represents the first time carbon fibre composites have been used in the primary load-bearing structures of a subway train for regular passenger operations. The train’s car body, bogies, and other key structural components incorporate carbon fibre composites, offering notable advantages in terms of weight reduction, energy efficiency, and durability.

14 February 2025. United States. Hitachi to modernize San Francisco’s Muni Railway signalling system

The company will implement its advanced SelTrac CBTC technology across Muni's 71-mile network, which includes 33 stations. Hitachi Rail has secured a contract with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) to overhaul the signalling system of the Municipal Railway (Muni) public transit. This upgrade is expected to positively impact approximately 160 million passenger journeys annually by improving the capacity and performance of Muni’s light rail metro trains and streetcars.

The duration of the Project is 60 months and the Defects Notification Period (DNP): is 12 months.

Job Requirements:

Hydraulic Engineers should have a Degree and a minimum of 10 years' experience out of which 6 years in Rail Industry designs and maintains of Hydraulic Systems for the equipment. Knowledge of fluid mechanics to ensure safe and efficient operation of Rail is a must.

Power Supply Engineer, Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Our client is seeking a Power Supply Engineer for a 31-month contract in Taiwan. Candidates must speak both Taiwanese and English, have knowledge of power, and be able to use CAD, if possible.

Employment period: 31 months from February 2025 to August 2027 (in principle, there is a 3-month trial period)

Work location: Kaohsiung (from March or April, until then, worked in Taipei)

Under the instruction of the Power Supply Sub System Manager (Power Supply SSM), the Power Supply Engineer will perform implementation of the design and coordination with the Construction Group. The Power Supply Engineer will report to the Power Supply Sub-System Manager (Power Supply SSM). Specific tasks include

Main Activities

- Performing functional requirements and analyses for various aspects of the Power Supply

- Providing design options

- Supporting coordination of multiple design/development groups, other contractors, and the owner from initial design through to commissioning

- Supporting coordination activities for interfaces, design data, tests, and other sub-systems engineering functions

- Preparation of documents and drawings for the Power Supply and OCS

- Supporting the purchase of the Power Supply Equipment and some OCS Equipment

- Supporting interfaces and work scope between various design/development/construction groups, other contractors, and the owner from the viewpoint of Power Supply

- Liaison with counterparts in other groups, other contractors, and the client

- Preparation of reports and analyses

- Supervision of construction for the Power Supply and OCS

- Performing inspections and tests for the Power Supply and OCS

- Supporting trainings

- Other duties as assigned by Power Supply SSM

Fieldwork will be required during the installation and commissioning stages of the project. Limited offshore travel, primarily to Japan, may be required.

Job Requirements:

The following CAD skills are needed for this role:

1. 1st to 2nd year CAD experience

2. CAD 2D production capacity (related to construction starting from zero)

3. CAD movable Cartesian coordinate system (UCS) interaction settings

4. CAD model space and page space settings

5. CAD progression settings (BLOCK, ATTDEF, etc.)

Senior Professional Electrical Engineer, Perth, Australia

Our client is an engineering consultancy and they are looking for a Senior Professional Electrical Engineer to be based in Perth, Western Australia.

Candidates must already reside in Australia to be considered for this role.

Our client is also looking for Senior Professional Electrical Engineers to be based in Newcastle or Melbourne.

As a senior professional electrical engineer and a senior member of the team, you will conduct technical reporting and analysis tasks, on-site testing, and commissioning activities along with project management and client interfacing. Your engineering and project experience will be key to assisting the client in delivering the following as part of a collaborative team against relevant Australian and International standards:

- Earthing system design, analysis, and compliance assessments is essential

- Lightning protection system design, analysis, and compliance assessments.

- Low-frequency interference studies.

- Protection grading studies and HV power system load flow investigations and analysis.

- Knowledge of Australian standards relating to high voltage and electrical installations.

- Prepare and review quality deliverables consistent with client expectations

- Manage projects and work packages to achieve quality, budgetary, and programme expectations

- Assist the management team with business development and maintaining client relationships

- Assist and mentor less experienced team members

Job Requirements:

- Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree (or higher)

- Must already reside in Australia

- Current driver's license

- Minimum five to ten two years (post-graduation) experience within high voltage design and commissioning fields

- Candidates must have earthing experience
