26 February 2025. Philippines. Dizon: ROW issues stall Metro Manila subway project
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is no longer setting a timeline on when the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) will be completed until such time that challenges on right of way (ROW) are sorted out. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon yesterday received his first briefing with project managers of the subway and was unsatisfied with the answers given to him regarding progress. He then directed the project managers of the MMSP to come up with a new schedule outlining when the railway can be opened partially and completed in its entirety.

25 February 2025. Portugal. Hitachi Rail wins contracts for Lisbon’s Cascais Line
Hitachi Rail has been awarded two new contracts to deliver its telecommunications and passenger information systems solutions on the Cascais Line, one of Lisbon’s busiest commuter routes. Hitachi Rail, alongside partners SISINT and Conecticabo, will implement a fully automated Passenger Information System (PIS), designed to provide real-time updates on train operations. This project expands SIP coverage to all stations on the line, ensuring a seamless, efficient, and transparent experience for passengers. The new technology will also support multimedia formats, making it adaptable for future innovations in passenger communication.

25 February 2025. India. India’s Texmaco, Nevomo form alliance to develop high-speed rail solutions
Texmaco Rail & Engineering, a rail solutions provider in India, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nevomo, a Polish technology company specialising in Magrail technology and Linear Propulsion Systems. This collaboration marks an advancement in the rail sector, aiming to bring high-speed rail solutions and predictive maintenance technologies to India and the global market, according to Texmaco. The alliance is set to co-develop and implement Nevomo’s advanced Magrail technology and Linear Propulsion Systems.

24 February 2025.Czech Republic. Praha cross-city rail tunnel plans firm up
The Ministry of Transport has selected a preferred design option for two railway tunnels to be built under Praha with a total length of 10·6 km. Announcing the news on January 28, infrastructure manager Správa Železnic said the two tunnels were proposed under a feasibility study that SŽ commissioned to address the future development of the Praha rail node. The expected cost of the tunnelling is KC185bn. Start of construction is scheduled for 2035 and completion for 2047.

21 February 2025. Canada. Canada to Develop High-Speed Rail in Toronto-Quebec City Corridor
The Canadian government has confirmed plans to develop a high-speed rail network connecting major cities in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. The project, named Alto, will cover approximately 1,000 kilometers and is expected to reach speeds of up to 300 km/h. The route will include stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City. Once operational, the service is projected to cut existing travel times in half. For example, a journey between Montréal and Toronto is anticipated to take approximately three hours.

21 February 2025. United Kingdom. 50 Years of Service Alstom's Heartwarming Tribute to Ken Davies
Alstom has celebrated Movements Manager Ken Davies’ 50-year railway career by naming a locomotive after him. Ken from Liverpool was surprised by colleagues at the Alstom Transport Technology Centre in Widnes, where the site’s Class 08 locomotive, 08721, had been fitted with a plaque bearing his name. “The rail industry has named locomotives after military regiments, football teams, ocean liners and big cities, so to be held in the same regard for giving the industry 50 years’ service – which has been a pleasure – is a total honour,” said Ken, who now lives in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

19 February 2025. Vietnam. Vietnam gives green light to $8bn rail link to China
The railway project will extend about 390.9km from Lao Cai province, near the Chinese border, to Lach Huyen station in Hai Phong, Vietnam. Vietnam’s National Assembly has approved a railway project connecting the country with China, marking a significant step in modernising its transport infrastructure. China is expected to partially fund the project, which is estimated to cost more than $8bn. The decision was made during the ninth extraordinary session, where lawmakers passed a esolution on the investment policy for the Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong railway construction project.

The joint investment of $577m by the Albanese and Barr Labor Governments aims to prevent future congestion in the capital. The Australian Government has announced the start of construction on the Canberra Light Rail Project’s Stage 2A extension, which will connect Civic to Commonwealth Park. The project forms part of a broader plan to improve transport connections in the rapidly growing capital. The joint investment of A$577m ($366m) by the Albanese and Barr Labor Governments for the project aims to prevent future congestion and provide seamless transit through Canberra.

Our client is also looking for Senior Professional Electrical Engineers to be based in Newcastle or Melbourne.
As a senior professional electrical engineer and a senior member of the team, you will conduct technical reporting and analysis tasks, on-site testing, and commissioning activities along with project management and client interfacing. Your engineering and project experience will be key to assisting the client in delivering the following as part of a collaborative team against relevant Australian and International standards:
- Earthing system design, analysis, and compliance assessments are essential
- Lightning protection system design, analysis, and compliance assessments.
- Low-frequency interference studies.
- Protection grading studies and HV power system load flow investigations and analysis.
- Knowledge of Australian standards relating to high voltage and electrical installations.
- Prepare and review quality deliverables consistent with client expectations
- Manage projects and work packages to achieve quality, budgetary and program expectations
- Assist the management team with business development and maintaining client relationships
- Assist and mentor less experienced team members
