4 March 2025. United Arab Emirates. Dubai moves forward with new Gold Line metro link

The Gold Line will connect older areas in Bur Dubai with Business Bay and newer residential developments in Meydan and Dubailand. Dubai has taken another significant step forward in tackling its ongoing traffic problems by starting the procurement process for a new metro link known as the Gold Line. The Gold Line will start at Al-Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai. It will run parallel to – and alleviate pressure on – the existing Red Line, before heading inland to Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village and residential developments in Dubailand. As a first step, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has sent a request for proposals (RFP) to firms for the lead consultancy role on the multibillion-dollar project.

4 March 2025. Japan. East Japan Railway Company Introduces E10 Shinkansen Train

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has unveiled the initial images and animation of the E10 Shinkansen, a new high-speed train designed by UK-based consultancy Tangerine. The E10 is scheduled to replace the E2 and E5 models on the Tohoku route, with entry into service planned for 2030. The project has now progressed to the design implementation phase. Tangerine is the first non-Japanese design partner to contribute to the development of a Shinkansen model.

3 March 2025. France. Hitachi Rail to upgrade Paris Metro line 12 with its digital signalling

Hitachi Rail has been awarded a contract to deliver its cutting edge CBTC digital signalling technology for line 12 of the Paris metro, operated by RATP. The contract, part of the OCTYS (Open Control Train Interchangeable Integrated System) 2030 programme, will see Hitachi Rail design and deploy wayside Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, based on RATP’s technical specifications. CBTC is the most advanced train control solution available today for metros, light rail and people movers.

3 March 2025. United Kingdom. DB Cargo signs major ETCS contract with Siemens Mobility

DB Cargo UK has signed a major contract with Siemens Mobility to begin fitting the new European Train Control System (ETCS) to the UK’s Class 66 freight locomotives. Work will begin in July to fit the new in-cab signalling system to nine Class 66 locomotives (all owned by DB Cargo UK) with the work being undertaken by the company at its Toton Traction Maintenance Depot in the East Midlands. The work, which is scheduled to be completed in March 2026, is the first phase of a national programme, which will eventually see all our Class 66 locomotives fitted with ETCS as part of the roll-out of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in the UK.

3 March 2025. United States. AECOM Appointed for East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project

AECOM has been selected as the lead designer for the final design phase of the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project. The company will work under the San Fernando Transit Constructors (SFTC) joint venture team to advance Phase 2 of the project for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The scheme includes at-grade light rail tracks and 11 stations over a 6.7-mile route, with the aim of improving transport connectivity and reliability in the San Fernando Valley region.

3 March 2025. Australia. Work Underway on Melbourne Airport Rail Project

The first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail project is set to commence, bringing major changes to the rail network around Sunshine Station. These upgrades will facilitate the future rail link to the airport and the electrification of the Melton line. Spanning more than six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion, the project will include two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station. Additional infrastructure enhancements include three new rail bridges, new and upgraded tracks, advanced signalling technology, and realignment of both passenger and freight lines.

3 March 2025. India. India’s Jupiter Wagons wins contract to supply wheelsets for Braithwaite & Co.

The Odisha project is progressing as planned, with the full wheel and axle production unit to be operational by December 2027. Jupiter Wagons’ specialised wheelset manufacturing arm Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory has secured a contract worth Rs2.55bn ($29.1m) from Braithwaite & Co for the supply of 9,140 wheelsets. The contract elevates Jupiter’s total order book to Rs5.6bn ($64m). Jupiter Wagons managing director Vivek Lohia said: “This order from Braithwaite & Co. underscores the trust in Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory’s manufacturing excellence and our ability to meet the evolving demands of India’s railway sector.

3 March 2025. China. Second Metro Line Opens in Taiyuan

The capital of Shanxi province gained a second metro line on February 22 with the opening of Line 1, celebrated at an event held at Xiayuan station. The 28·7 km line connects western and southeastern areas of Taiyuan, a city of 5·3 million people 400 km southwest of Beijing. It runs from Helongwan east across the city centre, then southeast to Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, with 24 stations. A second airport metro station as part of a planned 1·9 km extension. The city centre station at Dananmen provides interchange with north-south Line 2 which opened in December 2020.

27 February 2025. Morocco. Hyundai Rotem secures $1.5bn train deal with Morocco

Hyundai Rotem and Korea Railroad will jointly maintain the new trains, with details to be finalized separately. Hyundai Rotem, the train manufacturing arm of Hyundai Motor Group, has secured a KRW 2.2tn ($1.53bn) contract to supply advanced double-decker electric trains to Morocco’s national railway operator, ONCF. This deal marks the company’s first foray into the Moroccan market and is claimed to be its largest single railway supply agreement.

System Assurance Engineer, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

They have been awarded two major contracts: one to do the mid-life refurbishment of vehicles supplied by Siemens for Line 1 of the Kuala Lumpur Metro and the other to refurbish locomotives and wagons for the Malaysian Railways and to then maintain them.

They are looking for an experienced Systems Assurance Engineer to join their team doing the midlife refurbishment of the Siemens trains being used on Line 1 of the Kuala Lumpur Metro.

Our client would prefer a Malaysian Engineer but will consider overseas candidates.

# Prepare ROW land acquisition plans for the transit lines and follow up the approval procedures with concerned government authorities.
