13 June 2024. Australia. Sydney Metro to Western Sydney Airport tunnelling nears completion

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Catherine, Eileen and Peggy have completed their journeys as of 12 June, bringing the Sydney Metro connection to the Western Sydney Airport one big step closer. This project is set to connect the Western Sydney Airport and Aerotropolis at Bradfield to the wider Sydney rail network at St Marys. With boring near complete, the project will enter its next stage – the construction of six world-class stations along the 23km track.

13 June 2024. Brazil. Marcopolo Rail announces hybrid railcar in expansion drive

As part of an expansion of its range, rolling stock supplier Marcopolo Rail has increased the production capacity at its Caxias do Sul plant with the addition of a 2 600 m² hall, the manufacturer announced on June 5. The workshop features gantries and overhead cranes to support the production of Marcopolo’s range of lightweight railcars. The expanded plant will support its aim of delivering 100% domestic content for the Brazilian and wider Latin American market as well as open up possibilities to ‘develop projects with strategic partners’ in vehicle refurbishment, Marcopolo Rail says.

12 June 2024. United Kingdom. Eurotunnel celebrates 30th anniversary with race through the Channel Tunnel

Eurotunnel, the concessionaire of the Channel Tunnel infrastructure linking the UK with France, today continues its 30th anniversary celebrations by hosting a Tunnel Run and Walk for employees.  A whopping 300 workers from the UK and France are putting their best foot forward in a race through the world’s longest underwater railway tunnel to reach French or British mainland. Starting at the mid-point, the participants, joined by CEO Yann Leriche, will take part in a 30, 10 or 5 kilometre run or walk to celebrate 30 years since it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

11 June 2024. Netherlands. Delft Hyperloop achieves world’s first lane switch

Students have built a 42-metre test track on the Delft campus. Inside the steel structure floats their small, unmanned version of the hyperloop. According to the students, this is a promising means of transport to cover long distances quickly in the future. They have recently been testing their trajectory switching system.

11 June 2024. Canada. CN Unveils New Firefighting Trains

CN has unveiled two brand new firefighting trains, as well as two additional railcars, to its fire suppression fleet. The new, specialised fleet will join CN’s first firefighting railcar, Poseidon, in providing support against fires within CN’s right-of-way. CN has made the decision to introduce the new units in response to growing wildfires across Canada, supplying a significant increase of water and fire suppression capacity to rural areas throughout the country. Christened Neptune and Trident, the two trains are the latest in a line of firefighting railcars from the company.

11 June 2024. China. China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway agreed at Beijing trilateral meeting

Chinese, Kyrgyz, and Uzbek officials signed an agreement on the CKU railway project on 6 June according to Chinese state media. Spokesperson for Beijing’s Ministry of Transport Mao Ning confirmed the signing and said “the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project demonstrated the common aspiration for cooperation and development shared by the three countries.”

10 June 2024. Germany. DB completes €850m five-year renovation of high-speed line

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has completed a five-year renovation of the high-speed line between Hanover and Würzburg in Germany with 557km of track having undergone renewal. Work on the modernisation project began in 2019 and has included track, sleeper, and switch renewals – as well as superstructure repairs and subsurface stabilisation. Dr Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO, the company’s infrastructure and station management subsidiary, said: “For the common good, we have invested €850m here in five years and taken a big step towards a strong railway in Germany.

Job Description:

Our client is seeking 8x Communications Systems Technicians to work in Perth, Western Australia.

The Communications Systems Technician will be responsible for maintaining (by carrying out routine procedures and fault rectification procedures) an effective and efficient level of operating performance on the various Communications Systems and associated equipment on the client's network and the integration with train control systems, field signalling and telecommunications systems.

Core duties and responsibilities Management

* Supervises contractors engaged in communications systems maintenance activities.

Technical

* Maintains (by carrying out routine maintenance procedures and fault rectification procedures) an effective and efficient level of operating performance on the various Communications Systems namely:

- UHF Base station, Mobile and Portable Radio equipment

- High Density Microwave Radio Link System

- Transmission Network Management System

- Complex interconnected Radio Systems and Control equipment

- Data communications/transmission systems including multiplexers and modems

- Public Address equipment

- Power Supplies

- PLC, SCADA and telemetry systems

- Earthing & Lightning protection systems

- CCTV Systems

- Alarm systems

- DAVS (Driver Assistance Video System) Cameras, Splitters, Transmitters etc.

- Analogue & Digital Recording equipment

- Perimeter & Intruder/Tamper Security systems

- Video Multiplexing & Control systems

- Public Information Systems and Displays, and

- Telephony systems.

* Participates in the "On Call' Roster to provide out of hours support for all Communications Systems.

* Ensures relevant standards and procedures are applied to maintenance works.

* Carries out minor commissioning of new equipment, systems and technology.

* Coordinates and liaises with client or contract technical personnel to assist in the rectification of faults as required.

* Investigates and reports on irregularities, faults and actions taken at the system, equipment or board level.

* Monitors system and equipment performance.

* Investigates and analyses equipment failures and reliability.

* Investigates, reports and repairs irregularities, faults and actions taken at the system, equipment or board level.

* Prepares and maintains system documentation, procedures and reports etc and ensures all drawings are kept up to date.

* Maintains records of levels and location of relevant equipment/systems spares.

Job Requirements

1. Core Competencies

* ACMA Open Cabler Registration with endorsements in fibre optic, structured and coaxial cabling.

* Relevant trade status or equivalent and possession of, or progress towards, a relevant trade qualification and/ or demonstrated experience in the below listed communication systems.

* Considerable experience and demonstrated ability in the maintenance and fault findings of Communications Systems equipment including some or all of the following:

- UHF Base station, Mobile and Portable Radio equipment

- High Density Microwave Radio Link System

- Data communications/transmission systems including multiplexers and modems

- Public Address equipment

- DC Power Systems

- Telephony Systems

- PLC, SCADA and telemetry systems

- Earthing & Lightning protection systems Power Supplies

- Copper Cable communication systems

- Optic Fibre and associated equipment

- Commercial or Industrial CCTV Systems

- Analogue & Digital Recording equipment

- Video Multiplexing & Control systems, and

- Perimeter & Intruder/Tamper Security systems.

2. Communication and Interpersonal

* Well-developed written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

* Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical drawings and plans and the use of appropriate test equipment.

3. Special Requirements

* Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations to verify physical fitness to perform the duties of the position.

* Provision of a current National Police Clearance certificate, dated 3 months or less from the date of application for the position.

* Possession of a current Western Australian "C' Class Driver's licence or equivalent.

* Ability to work at moderate heights as well as in confined spaces.

* Ability to participate in call-out roster if required and work unsociable hours on occasion at short notice.
