17 July 2024. United Kingdom. King announces Government will launch Great British Railways

The King has announced legislation that will lead to the establishment of Great British Railways during his State Opening of Parliament. His Majesty King Charles III addressed Parliament earlier today, setting out the legislative programme for the new Session of Parliament and outlining the new Government’s priorities for the coming year. The King announced that the Government will indeed proceed with the long-anticipated launch of Great British Railways, which will see the UK’s private rail operators back into public ownership as their contracts expire.

17 July 2024. Iraq. Baghdad metro consultancy contract awarded

The city of Baghdad has awarded a contract for the provision of project management and supervision services for the US$17·5bn metro project. The contract has been awarded to a 50:50 joint venture of Malaysian company HSS Engineering and its UAE-registered long-term collaborative partner Consultant HSS. The scope includes design review, overseeing the pre-qualification stage of the procurement process, auditing surveying activities, reviewing project performance specifications, conducting schedule reviews and providing supervision services.

17 July 2024. Italy. Metro Line 6 Opens in Naples

The City of Naples has commenced passenger service on Metro Line 6, which will use Hitachi Rail’s digital signalling and rolling stock as part of a 200 million EUR contract. The new Metro Line 6 is approximately 6 kilometres long and connects 8 stations across the city, including 4 new ones. Initially, the line will use existing rolling stock. However, Hitachi Rail will also introduce 22 new trains from 2025.

16 July 2024. China. Alstom launches new joint venture in China to supply Hefei metro

Rail manufacturing giant Alstom has launched another joint venture in China to support the growth of its rail business in Hefei with a new factory in the city. The company’s Hefei Alstom Rail Transport Equipment (HATEE) opened the traction systems factory in the city to build equipment for the Hefei Metro’s Line 8 after Alstom signed a cooperation agreement with the city in July 2023.

15 July 2024. Australia. METRONET opens three new stations

The METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension is complete, connecting communities in Perth’s northern suburbs to the rail network. The Yanchep Rail Extension extends the Joondalup Line 14.5 kilometres north from Butler, and includes three new stations in Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep. Each station has modern facilities and ample parking, with more than 900 parking bays at Yanchep Station, 700 bays at Alkimos Station and 400 at Eglinton.

15 July 2024. Germany. Alstom signs contract to deliver metro’s CBTC installation

Alstom has signed a framework agreement worth €2.8 billion with Hamburger Hochbahn AG to cover the delivery of almost 400 automated and semi-automated metro trains. The framework agreement includes 254 semi-automated and 120 fully automated (GoA4) DT6 metro trains, each consisting of four cars. With a modern interior design, digital passenger guidance and USB charging connections, the fleet offers high capacity, passenger safety and comfort.

15 July 2024. United Kingdom. Next-gen digital monitoring trialled on East Coast Main Line

Network Rail, LNER, CrossTech, and Hitachi Rail are collaborating to trial the latest in digital asset monitoring to observe the natural environment and track, including vegetation and embankments. Monitoring areas in real-time further enhances safety, helping detect potential hazards like overhanging or invasive tree species, leaves on the track, or embankment subsidence that could cause harm or delays. Network Rail previously estimated that vegetation-related incidents cost up to £3 million annually in the Southern region alone.

Job Description:

Our client is looking for an experienced engineer to be based in South Korea to help them develop their business in the Middle East/Israel as a rail system turnkey contractor by carrying out sales and marketing activities before bidding and to project manage the work won after award of contracts.

Period of Contract: 2 years base period (Further extension by mutual agreement)

Position Responsibilities:

During Pre-Tender and Tender Stage to:

- Establish and maintain regular contact with the Client, potential consortium partners/suppliers, governmental bodies and other officials where appropriate to promote the Company as a rail system turnkey contractor in the Middle East and global market

- Keep the Company advised for the outcome of such regular contact

- Support the Company to form a proper partnership for rail turnkey tender

- Assist the Company to prepare the right strategy and high quality bidding proposal in the aimed bidding projects

- Review RFPs from the client and annualize any risk factors/solutions

- Co-ordinate with partners for system integration scope of work and responsibilities, and to write/review of relevant proposals in respect of system integration during bidding preparation stage

- Report periodically about market practice, relative positions and movement of competitors, published or informal information from the Client during the Tender progress

During the Contract execution stage to

- Be nominated as a System Integration and Interface Engineer for specific projects awarded

- Maintain active and close communication and coordination with the Client, its representatives and assigned consultant from the Client and/or Contractor, consortium partners/suppliers and the Company in order to perform the awarded Contract successfully in all technical commercial matters

- Provide the Company technical assistance for the good performance of the contract

- Assist the Company to obtain licenses, consents, approvals, and any other governmental permits for the performance of its obligations under the Contract in the Territory

- Support the Company to avoid or mitigate risks which may be incurred during the contract execution

- Provide Proactive risk, saving and opportunity management

- Manage project progress and its KPIs, and report to top management, with transparency during the business/critical project reviews. The Qualified Project Manager is the representative of the project towards the Company management.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

* 20+ years rail system integration and rail business

* Knowledge about the latest rail signaling technology

* Previous experience working in major players, or Rail System consultant or Rail Signaling Suppliers are preferred.

* Language Skill: English (Fluent)

Preferred Qualifications:

* Engineering study is required

* Experience managing complex international railway projects

* Familiarity with railway system certification and safety regulations

* Ability to thrive in a multicultural and diverse team environment
