18 April 2025. Sweden. High-speed rail grinding on the Stockholm metro

Stockholm metro maintenance contractor Strukton Rail has awarded Vossloh a subcontract to use a High-Speed Grinding machine to remove corrugations, slip waves, and other signs of rail wear. The HSG-city grinding machine can be pulled or pushed and grinds the rails while travelling at up to 60 km/h. The contract runs for two years from August and can be extended for a further six years. The HSG-city machine will operate during overnight engineering hours.

17 April 2025. United Kingdom. New electric tram-trains in testing for South Wales Metro

Brand-new electric tram-trains are now being tested on the recently electrified Valley’s railway lines, as TfW takes another step forward with delivering the next phase of the South Wales Metro. Part of an £800 million investment into brand-new trains across Wales and the Borders, the Stadler Class 398 CITYLINK tram-trains will revolutionize transport in South Wales. With the ability to run on both rail and tram lines, they can operate on overhead electrical lines and battery power, and with three carriages, can carry more than 250 passengers.

16 April 2025. Australia. Alliance picked for Queensland rail works

Contractors have been announced for the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Queensland.

CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors and UGL have secured the design and pre-construction contract for the Logan and Gold Coast (LGC) Faster Rail project, a major upgrade aimed at boosting capacity and service frequency on one of Queensland’s busiest transport corridors. Awarded as part of the ActivUs Alliance – comprising CPB Contractors, UGL, ACCIONA, SMEC, and WSP.

16 April 2025. United Kingdom. World-First: Hitachi Rail Enables Digitally Signalled Steam Locomotive with ETCS Technology

In a historic first for the railway industry, testing of a steam locomotive fitted with Hitachi Rail’s European Train Control System (ETCS) in Level 2 has been completed successfully on the Cambrian line in Wales. As part of Network Rail’s East Coast Digital Program (ECDP), the historic Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado is the first steam locomotive in the world to operate on a digital signalling route. This project marks a milestone in the evolution of UK rail and the futureproofing of UK rail infrastructure.

16 April 2025. Taiwan. Alstom to Deliver Driverless Signalling System for Taichung Blue Line

Alstom has secured a 159 million USD contract to deliver a driverless communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling system for the Taichung Metro’s Blue Line. The project, commissioned by the Rapid Transit System Bureau of the Taichung City Government, is being delivered by an international consortium that includes Singapore Technologies Engineering (STE), CTCI, and Hyundai Rotem Company. The Blue Line will be Taichung’s second fully operational metro line and will stretch 24.8 kilometers, connecting 20 stations.

16 April 2025. Australia. Acciona wins contract for Logan and Gold Coast rail project in Australia

The project will add train services to meet the expected demand for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Acciona, as part of the ActivUs Alliance, has been awarded the contract for the design and pre-construction phase of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Queensland, Australia. The Faster Rail project aims to enhance train services between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, thereby supporting regional development by increasing network capacity. It is set to provide more frequent train services.

16 April 2025. United Kingdom. Telent wins telecoms renewal contract for Wales and Western region in the UK

The telecoms renewal program is set to be completed by March 2029, aligning with the conclusion of the CP7 project timeline. Telent has been awarded a contract by Network Rail to implement a telecoms renewal program across the Wales and Western Region in the UK. This initiative marks the first telecoms-only framework awarded for Control Period 7 (CP7), which is part of Network Rail’s five-year planning and funding cycle. The move aims to improve rail services from London to Penzance.
